Pulling in the laundry
So last night at orchestra Maestro gave the directive for those of us with quarter notes in Rimsky-Korsakov's "Procession of the Nobles" to “pull” the notes rather than push the tempo. He likened it to pulling in the laundry on a clothesline. What? … Do you mean to tell me that 25-year-old Maestro knows what a pulley-style clothesline is? That alone was amusing, not to mention the comments coming from the violin section. (“Is that dirty laundry or clean laundry?” “I think it’s clean laundry.” “Did he say underwear?”)
Well, just another chapter in “Maestro’s Entertaining Analogies.”
Come to think of it, my 23-year-old niece has a pulley clothesline at her off-campus apartment. They’re definitely old-fashioned, but I guess they’re not obsolete. And they’re certainly very efficient.

If your maestro even has "laundry" occur to him, that must mean that he is familiar with housework, to some extent. Married, is he? If not, sounds like a spectacular catch for some lucky young lady!
BTW, "Procession of the Nobles" is our maestro's favorite piece!
Your section should attach some laundry (no suggestions whether it should be clean or dirty) to your bows to show Maestro that you understood his point!
Maybe it is an ecological movement, to abandon clothes dryers for clotheslines. Sounds like a great way to remember how to play that section.
Maestro has a girlfriend; they’ve been dating for over a year now.
Yes, Yarnplayer, I agree that he’s a good catch. He seems more mature than other guys his age … an observation that I’m basing on his personality as well as the fact that he was able to assume leadership of our orchestra fresh out of college, and is now also teaching music/orchestra full time at a local middle school.
CelloGeek, your comment left me LOL. (Perhaps some lingerie clothes-pinned to the bow?)
Maricello, a very green idea indeed!
I had no idea your maestro is so young. (Now that I think about it, I always tended to picture one of Elaine's boyfriends, the maestro, from Seinfeld...).
I've always loved "Procession of the Nobles." The opening trumpet part is a lot of fun.
XO
Haha, your Maestro sounds like a great guy. I'd love to have him as my conductor!
