Back in the Saddle Again
Orchestra rehearsals resumed last Thursday after spring break. There's sheet music strewn all over my dining room, and I'm loving it. We got the playlist for the next concert and copies of all the music.
The good news: Most of the pieces are within my reach this time.
The bad news: "The Glow Worm" is back on the agenda.
In the midst of my music meltdown 2 weeks prior to the spring concert I'd neglected to mention that "Glow Worm" had been removed from our spring concert repertoire following our "eh" rehearsal, (see Practicing ... NOT!!!! Ranting ... yes.), but S had said that we'd get back to it for the next concert, as well as recycle a few others that we'd just played.
So I've been practicing diligently since the spring concert and have considerably upped my daily practice sessions over the past 2 weeks. During this time I've made scales and lesson material as much of a priority as orchestra music, and I intend to keep the momentum going.
Our next concert is outdoors (weather permitting) has a patriotic theme, and will be held on July 3, just 4 days before my daughter's wedding.
Labels: orchestra rehearsal, practice

I love outdoor concerts. Hope the weather cooperates for yours, and that you are able to concentrate, with your daughter's wedding so close.
And it is always nice when most of the music is in your comfort zone so you can work on polishing and perfecting! Not having heard it, I would tend to share your opinion of Glow Worm. :-)
If you click on the hyperlink for "The Glow Worm" that I added to the post you can hear the 1950's Mills Brothers' vocal version of it. The instrumental version we're playing doesn't "swing" like that, but is rather a bit old-fashioned and nostalgic. The piece was originally intended a Gavotte when first published back in 1902. Lyrics were added later by Johnny Mercer.
Interesting history on Glow Worm. I wasn't able to hear the music on that particular site, but found the Mills Brothers recording and a bunch of others via Real Player. Not a bad tune after all! Hope you have fun with it!
Sounds like things are humming along. You must be pretty busy with concert & wedding prep.
Yup, the "Glow Worm" is finally starting to work its way into my favor. At least it's not boring: ***pizz/arco/pizz/arco/pizz/arco, etc.
***rapid arpeggios spanning several octaves and positions
***some melody for the cellos
Ahhhh ... the wedding plans. To keep my wits about me and still have time for practice, lessons and orchestra I must do at least one wedding-related activity per day.
Hi Donna. It sounds so cozy to have sheet music strewn about the dining room--it suggests real passion and enthusiasm.
Thanks for the Glow Worm link. I, too, was unfamiliar with it, but that sampling helped me to understand why Glow Worm made the bad news category.
I just realized that your daughters wedding is on 7-7-07. How cool. My husband and I were thinking that it would be pretty neat if our baby was born that day, too. He's due on the 10th of July.
XO,
Jill
My husband had a craniotomy a week or two before our daughter's wedding and was absolutely fine for walking her up the aisle, and giving the fond father's speech at the reception. You'll cope with wedding and concert magnificently, I am sure! By the way we had a string quartet at the reception which was a real joy, especially when they performed their special version of "Will you still love me when I'm 64", which is our daughter and son-in-law's special song"
